Chapter Three
Outskirts of Omaha, Nebraska
Time: 15:37:22:01
Depth from surface: 3410 ft
The MORTek scientist read the display and frowned. The numbers were not good. They were not making enough progress. He checked the data again, looking for errors. It was accurate. Based on the data, it had taken them seven weeks to dig through the first 3000 feet and they still had 3400 feet to go. Every day the signal was getting weaker and soon there would be no signal at all.
Digging through their time into the next, was like trying to empty a cruise ship filled with water with only a teacup for a bucket. There was no way that they would reach the surface before the portal closed.
He would have to give Mr. Morehouse the bad news and he wasn't looking forward to it. Morehouse expected you to tell him that anything was possible. He would view this as a failure and never as what it really was to begin with—an impossibility.
