The Time Travelers, Book 1:  Lessons in Time Travel

   

and now everything had changed. It was lifetimes ago. She didn’t know if she could ever get back home again. She thought briefly of what she had left behind, and felt a wave of sadness wash over her.

   The only thing she could not reconcile was the order of events. Even the scientific explanation had not resolved the contradiction for her. An insidious thought snuck in, as it had before, and tried to lodge there. But in spite of it, she moved forward.

   A noise startled her. She quickly looked around. Someone had dropped an umbrella, nothing more.  She focused again on her task, and pushed all negative thoughts aside. The time for doubt was past.

   At the card catalogues, the girl ran her fingers along the wall of small wooden drawers until she found the one she sought, pulled it out, and shuffled through the cards. She wrote the call number on a scrap of paper, and headed toward the stacks. After carefully scanning the shelves, her eyes recognized the book, and she pulled it out and slipped it into her bag. When she was away from the watchful eyes of the librarians she would pass on her message.
