Chapter Two

ITHACA, NEW YORK, SIX MONTHS EARLIER

AN UNEXPECTED PARCEL had arrived that morning, and Gwendolyn Porter and her younger brother JD were still unsure what to make of it. They were in the living room on the old tufted leather sofa, re-reading a note. The note was hand-written, and addressed to “Mrs. Penelope Porter & family.” It began:

“Following the untimely death of your great uncle, hereby please find the contents of your inheritance. We are also including a key, found in the pocket of the deceased, although we were unable to determine what it unlocks. All of these items are for you to do with as you wish, or not, as the case may be.”

A key was taped to the letter. In front of them was an opened package containing an hourglass, a mirror and a boot.
