THREE MONTHS EARLIER (back when things were almost whole)

 

   “Did you light it yet?”

  “No. I only want to light it if we really need to. These are important documents. They may be the only copies that exist.

Besides, it’s safer if no one knows we’re here. Fire might give us away.”

   Was it better to be cold or dead? Sometimes she wondered. She tried to shake that thought out of her head.

   She rummaged through the living room. Not a book or magazine in sight. She found other papers. These would work. She pulled old newspapers from a birdcage and removed the paper that lined the kitchen cupboards and drawers.

   “Here, JD. We’ll use these first.”
