The Time Travelers, Book 2:  Humanity's Mirror

Gwen was always good at finding things when it seemed they had exhausted all options. He wasn’t sure how she managed it. His sister was extremely resourceful or lucky or both. Maybe she was just tenacious. He used to find her persistence annoying. Not anymore.

“We need small things that burn easily to use as kindling and then we can use larger pieces of wood once the fire gets going.”

   “Like the furniture.” JD said.

“Yes,” she said regretfully, looking around the room. She recognized the antique Chippendale cabinet by its ball and claw feet, and the piece next to it was a rare Chinese étagère. Unfortunately, its shelves, intricately carved with dragons and serpents were the most promising, since they would burn easily. She hoped it wouldn’t come to that. Burning one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture done by master craftsmen was not her idea of firewood. These could be in a museum and were worth a small fortune. But she would burn them if it came to that. She would do whatever it took to keep them alive.

It wasn’t only to protect her brother or her own strong survival instinct that urged her on. At times, it would have been easier to give up. No, it was the information they had—important information that had to be saved. And if they died, it went with them.

She looked at her brother. He had deep scratches on his shoulders and a nasty bruise on his leg that made it difficult for him to walk. But after what they had been through, it was surprising he had come out of it as well as he had.
