The Time Travelers, Book 2:  Humanity's Mirror

“We should burn things that aren’t painted,” she said. “Burning paint will release fumes that could make us sick. Besides, we need to use the fire for cooking, too.”

“We have something to cook, Gwen?” JD sounded hopeful. They hadn’t eaten in decades. It was only when they stopped running that she realized how hungry she was. He must be starving, too.

“We’ll find something,” she said, catching his gaze. “Don’t worry,” she added softly. One thing she had learned—no matter how difficult the situation, there was always something you could do. The most important thing was not to panic. If you panicked, you stopped thinking clearly.

“Was there anything in the pantry or the cupboards?”

JD shook his head. “I’ve checked. Someone must have already been through here. They’ve cleaned the place out.”

She would look into that. There had to be something. But for now, she took her brother at his word while she assessed their situation.

She removed the items from her daypack, placing them on the floor, and started to do a quick inventory of what they had scavenged so far.

“I still don’t understand why we can’t go back,” said JD. She stopped repacking her gear as soon as she detected the slightest hint of a whine.

That wouldn’t do at all. He had to keep strong, or at the very least, not freak out on her. She looked up at him straight in the eyes.

“Do you know what a lemming is?” she asked, staring at him.
