   “Yes. I’ve played the videogame,” he responded, staring back.

   “Then no further explanation is needed. Besides, that door is closed.”

   That seemed to shut him up. She didn’t want to belittle him, but right now she needed to assert herself as the leader. She knew how to get them through this.

   And, she didn’t disagree with him in principal. It would have been a logical move to join the others—the whole power in numbers thing. If the world weren’t so topsy-turvy. If everything hadn’t come crashing down on them. But they were on a special mission. Their objective was not just to survive, but to return home. This was not their time.

   “I did my homework, but I suppose you didn’t. Or if you did your homework, you only went through the motions and didn’t really understand it.”

  It wasn’t an accusation. It was merely an observation. JD wasn’t very studious, except in matters of science and math.

   He stopped x’ing and looked at her.

   “I don’t see why that matters now.”

   “Well, I got an A in History and I didn’t just cram all that information into my head and then forget it after the tests were over.” Somehow it seemed quaint and safe to argue about things like this, as if they were back in school, back in Ithaca, discussing study habits. Hypothetical things. If only their lives could be as simple as that. Not real things like how would they survive until they found the portal?  Even if they did find it, would they be able to access it?  These thoughts were all in her head, just beneath the surface, ready to bubble up at any
